Over 3,000 baptisms in Maputo and a line by the sea

The ceremony took place on a beach in Mozambique, and the mission asked people to look at the decisions, not the number.

More than 3,000 people lined up on a beach in Maputo, Mozambique, to be baptized last weekend, according to La Corriente. There, the baptisms in Maputo brought together new believers who gave public testimony of their faith.

The images shared by Ney Viana, a Brazilian pastor and leader of the missionary organization Missões Pastores de Rua, show numerous people in white robes at the water's edge. He traveled to Africa with his team and took part in the activity. In a video shared during the day he announced: "There are more than 3,000 people."

A line waiting its turn

The new believers waited their turn in long lines before going down to the sea. Christians from the area took part in the ceremony: they helped with the baptisms and accompanied with worship and Bible reading.

«Decisions, on the other hand, only God sees.»

Think about that line for a moment. There is no stage or giant screen. Just water, sand and a decision each one made on their own. Baptism does not save anyone: it is the visible sign of a faith that was already born in the heart.

The number was not the point

For the missionary organization, the figure was not the central issue. What mattered was that thousands of people had decided to believe and were saying it in front of everyone. They also called it a historic day before God.

It is worth making that distinction, because numbers are counted, photographed and boasted about. Decisions, on the other hand, only God sees.

After Peter's first sermon, "those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls" (Acts 2:41, ESV). The resemblance to the beach in Maputo is striking, but the point is the same: the church grows through a work that no one controls.

A full beach does not make a country Christian, and no leader will do it by charisma. Faith grows church by church, house by house, in people with names. Tying the gospel to a nation or to a man is an old and repeated mistake.

The mission continued after the baptism

Viana and his team's trip through Africa did not end at the shore. The mission included social actions: they handed out toys, candy and evangelism books to 600 children at an orphanage. Preaching and serving were part of the same trip.

There is something there you can copy without taking a plane. Faith does not stay in the temple or in a social media post. It shows in what you do for someone who cannot pay you back.

If you are afraid to talk about Jesus at school, at work or in your home, look at that line in Maputo. Thousands of people decided that their faith would not be a secret. You do not need a beach or a crowd: you need to take the step where God placed you.

Pray this week for the brothers and sisters in Mozambique, for those who entered the water and for those who are still thinking about it. And if you believe in Jesus and have not yet been baptized, talk to your pastor. What is holding you back?
