Brian "Head" Welch had it all, according to the world. Cofounder and guitarist of Korn, one of the biggest metal bands: 35 million albums sold, awards, money, cars, houses. Everything.

And inside he was empty, trapped in a meth addiction he couldn't kick. "I couldn't stay sober. I didn't know how. I hit rock bottom," he confesses.

The bottom wasn't an overdose. It was something more ordinary and more painful: hearing his little daughter sing one of his own band's explicit songs. "What am I doing? —he thought—. I'm going to die."

«Jesus, if you're real, please take these drugs away. Come into my life.»

A friend shared a phrase from Jesus with him: "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). That verse chased him. Until one night, with a hundred-dollar bill and a line of crystal in front of him, he cried out to God:

"Jesus, if you're real, like that pastor said today, please take these drugs away. Come into my life. Come into my heart."

Weeks later he surrendered to Christ in a church in Bakersfield. The next day he threw out all his drugs. He quit Korn and a $23 million record deal. And he flew to Israel to be baptized in the Jordan River.

He didn't leave it all behind out of discipline or fear. He left it because he found something better. "I'm the happiest man in the world right now," he declared.

Notice what Christ didn't do: he didn't ask him to clean up first. He received him tired, burdened and broken, and gave him rest. That's grace: you don't come to Jesus fixed up; you come as you are, and He makes you new.

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, ESV).

Maybe your "success" isn't a metal band: maybe it's your career, your followers, your image. If you already have it and you're still empty, the problem isn't what's missing. It's that you need a Savior. What are you chasing today that doesn't fill you?
