Montaner's first No. 1 after nearly 30 years
«Para Que Seas Feliz» tops US Latin radio with 8.9 million audience impressions, a record wait on the chart.
Ricardo Montaner scored his first No. 1 on Latin Airplay with «Para Que Seas Feliz», according to Billboard. The Oct. 3 chart marks the 21st entry of a career that began on that ranking in 1996.
A wait of nearly three decades
He debuted on the chart in 1996 with «Soy Tuyo». Since then he logged nine top 10s, the first with «Es Así» in 1997, and twice came within one step of No. 1: «El Poder de Tu Amor» in 1999 and «Yo Puedo Hacer» in 2002.
«Para Que Seas Feliz» rose from third to first with a 39% gain in audience: 8.9 million impressions in the United States during the week of Sept. 18–24, according to Luminate. It beat «Ay San Miguel», by Romeo Santos and Prince Royce, which dropped to second after a week at the top.
«A chart measures how many people listen to a song; it does not measure how much a person is worth.»
Billboard reported that the nearly 30-year wait is the longest for a first No. 1 in the chart's 32-year history. The previous record was Los Ángeles Azules: 27 years, from their debut in 1997 to their first leader, in July 2024.
The remix that opened another chart
The push came from several directions. The song spends three weeks at No. 1 on Latin Pop Airplay and rises to No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay, driven by the remix with Edén Muñoz. For Montaner, it is his first appearance on that chart and his first leader there.
It is not his debut at the top of Billboard: he had already accumulated eight No. 1s on different charts and four on Latin Pop Airplay. This one is different because it is his first on the overall Latin radio ranking.
«It gives me immense pleasure to know that we have crossed generations throughout this career», he told Billboard (Sígueme translation).
What sustains a craft
His chart history starts earlier. «Tan Enamorados» reached No. 9 on Hot Latin Songs in 1988, and «Castillo Azul» topped that list for nine straight weeks in 1992. He has four No. 1s on Hot Latin Songs and two on Top Latin Pop Albums: Ricardo Montaner (1989) and Ida y Vuelta (2016).
Montaner recalled that back then three or four singles per album were promoted and all genres coexisted on a single chart. That ability to sustain several songs at once, he said, gave him greater longevity.
Thirty years later, his first No. 1 on Latin radio did not come from a stroke of luck. It came from continuing to work when second place seemed like the ceiling. A chart measures how many people listen to a song; it does not measure how much a person is worth.
«And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up» (Galatians 6:9, ESV).
This week you can do something small and without an audience: finish that project, practice, keep what you promised. Consistency in what no one sees sustains what one day is celebrated. What do you sustain even when no one applauds you?
