What if the "yes" you prayed at 15 didn't count? Doubt arrives late: in college, in a new group, on social media where faith is measured by what you feel on Sunday.

The marks of a conversion are not a passing emotion. John wrote his first letter to people who already believed and still doubted.

Your assurance doesn't live in a date

Writing a date in your Bible isn't wrong: your baptism, a camp, the night you prayed. The problem is carrying that date as if it were the foundation.

«Assurance isn't born from looking back, it's born from looking at whom you trust today.»

— Samuel Ibarra

John writes it bluntly: "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life" (1 John 5:13, ESV). Notice the order: assurance isn't born from looking back, it's born from looking at whom you trust today.

Faith is not a memory stored in a drawer; it is living trust in Christ, the one who died and rose for you. Nor is it measured by comparing yourself with the most spiritual person in the group. There are those who sing with tears and then live the same way; there are those who are quiet and walk with God for years. Emotions go up and down. Christ doesn't.

Love for your brother leaves marks

"We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers" (1 John 3:14, ESV). That love is not a vague feeling toward humanity. It shows in the concrete: putting up with the one you don't like, forgiving the one who ignored you, serving when no one applauds. It includes the brother who thinks differently about politics or music.

John goes so far as to say that whoever does not love his brother remains in death. The reason is simple: the love that saves is first received. Whoever knows they are forgiven forgives differently.

The Spirit testifies from within

"By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit" (1 John 4:13, ESV). The Holy Spirit convicts of sin, gives new life, and confirms from within that you belong to God's family.

To that mark John adds obedience: "And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments" (1 John 2:3, ESV). It's not about flawless perfection, but about direction: sin hurts you and you want to please God.

None of these marks is manufactured. They are evidences that grace leaves, not achievements you present. That's why you can examine them without fear: they are not an exam to pass, they are signs that someone already holds you.

This week read 1 John straight through. It's five short chapters; with coffee and half an hour it's enough. Write three answers: Who do I trust today? Whom do I truly love? Who is changing my life from within? If those answers leave you in Christ, there is your assurance. And if the doubt continues, don't hide it: take it to God, to your pastor, to a mature believer who knows you. Assurance isn't manufactured with formulas; it's discovered in the marks that grace leaves.
