Four Latin American countries offered aid to Panama after the earthquake in Panama on Friday, October 9, 2026. The HCH report places the epicenter near Tonosí, on the Azuero Peninsula.

Four countries offer collaboration

The movement was first reported at magnitude 7.7 and shook the south of the country. The governments of Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and Chile spoke in favor of cooperating with Panama's response.

Colombia's president, Abelardo de la Espriella, expressed solidarity with Panama and stressed the friendship and ties that unite the two countries. Bernardo Arévalo, president of Guatemala, called his Panamanian counterpart to express his support and offer cooperation.

Arévalo added that his diplomatic mission was closely monitoring the situation of Guatemalans residing in Panama. Mexico added its support through diplomatic channels, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attentive to the evolution of the quake.

Panama assesses damage and aftershocks

President José Raúl Mulino ordered teams, supplies and resources to be mobilized to help those affected. The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), ministries and other state institutions are taking part in the efforts.

Early reports include cracked buildings and damage to public works. Homes and temples of historical value were also affected. Emergency teams are inspecting the hardest-hit areas and assisting the population.

The ground kept moving after the main quake. Néstor Luque, director of the Institute of Geosciences at the University of Panama, reported that the number of aftershocks exceeds 80. Authorities asked people to stay calm and follow only official channels.

When the earth shakes, the church responds

An earthquake of that strength leaves two tasks: deal with the urgent and don't get in the way. If you have family or friends on the Azuero Peninsula or in the south of the country, write to them today. Knowing they are okay is worth more than any chain of messages.

Before forwarding a video or a figure, check where it came from. Official agencies are the ones that publish the reports, and a data point with no clear origin only adds noise in the middle of an emergency.

If you want to give, look for verifiable channels: your local church, humanitarian agencies with a presence on the ground or the accounts the Panamanian government opens for the emergency. Ask where your contribution is going before sending it.

And if money is out of reach, give time. Praying, helping translate official information or accompanying a Panamanian family that lives near you also counts.

If you are in Panama, follow Sinaproc's instructions before any WhatsApp audio. If you are far away, a short message may be the only thing that person receives today.

"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2, ESV). Every aftershock reminds us how fragile everything we build is. It also reminds us that no one was made to tremble alone.
