On October 11, the New England Patriots crushed the Las Vegas Raiders 45-17. Drake Maye threw four touchdown passes, ran for another and totaled 374 yards, Sports Spectrum reported.

Minutes later, in his field interview with CBS, Maye said: «Thank the good Lord to be out here, to be healthy». The phrase doesn't explain the win or promise the next one. It gives thanks for something more basic: being healthy and able to play.

Five scores after six interceptions

To measure the weight of that phrase, you have to look back. In the first three games of the season, Maye threw one touchdown and six interceptions. The Patriots were 1-2 and coming off a 35-6 loss to Jacksonville.

«Work done well, repeated, eventually shows up.»

During that stretch, he was asked at a press conference what he leaned on when he wasn't playing well and the team wasn't winning. He answered that first, his faith, that there's nothing more important and that his purpose in this life is to be a son of the Lord. He didn't mention the scoreboard.

That's where you see the difference between a faith that sustains and a faith that depends on the result. The first one withstands six interceptions. The second collapses with the first bad Sunday.

On Sunday he completed 26 of 34 passes, with 374 yards, four touchdown passes and no interceptions. He added 25 yards and another touchdown on the ground. That made five total, his second game with that number. His 374 yards were six shy of his personal best. The Patriots are half a game behind Buffalo for the AFC East lead.

The credit he shared

The star offseason signing was wide receiver A.J. Brown, who suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 1 and is on injured reserve. With him out, Maye has thrown to less-known receivers.

After the game he said that seeing teammates who do the right thing over and over finally get their reward is something beautiful. Sharing the credit, he added, is the best part of his position.

For someone just starting out, that teaches more than a scoreboard: work done well, repeated, eventually shows up. And the one who leads doesn't keep all the light.

In February, before Super Bowl LX, Maye had already told Sports Spectrum that the Word of God is bigger than football and that his purpose is to shine so others follow Jesus. In another press conference he described himself as a follower of Jesus Christ and said that's the greatest thing in his life.

Faith doesn't hand out trophies

Maye's faith didn't guarantee him 374 yards. His team was coming off a blowout and he was coming off six interceptions, and he kept playing. That's what no streak of results can give: an identity that doesn't rise or fall with the scoreboard.

Watch out for the other extreme. When faith becomes a formula for winning, the player puts himself at the center and God becomes a means. Maye said it the other way around: his goal is for others to follow Christ. Records, playoffs and contracts are work, and work is done well.

It's also worth not building statues. A declaration of faith doesn't make anyone a teacher; Scripture remains the standard. What he said is public, and it can be celebrated without exaggeration.

Colossians 3:23 says it plainly: «Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men» (Colossians 3:23, ESV). The Patriots host the New York Jets next Sunday, who come in with two wins and three losses.

If your faith depends on the scoreboard, any streak will knock it down. Work for the Lord, give thanks for the chance to play and leave the result where it belongs. This week, on your field, who defines who you are?
